Australian marine researchers have launched an urgent intervention to rescue the Great Barrier Reef, collecting coral sperm and eggs during the current spawning season to fertilize and grow new coral that will be replanted on the most degraded sections of the reef. The effort, led by scientists at Southern Cross University, is part of the Larval Restoration Project, which aims to compensate for the reef's sharp decline in natural reproduction.
The reef, one of the world's most iconic ecosystems, has been hit by repeated bleaching events driven by rising ocean temperatures and acidification. According to Sky News, roughly half of the reef's coral has died off, and with fewer healthy colonies, natural fertilization rates have plummeted. To counter this, the team has built specialized collection devices that capture the sperm and egg bundles released by remaining coral during the annual mass spawning, which began earlier this week.
Floating Nurseries for Baby Coral
The collected gametes are mixed to achieve fertilization, and the resulting larvae are then raised inside floating booms—large, contained enclosures that serve as temporary nurseries. Once the young coral have grown sufficiently, they are transplanted back onto the reef. The approach has been described by the researchers as "IVF for coral," a reference to the assisted reproduction techniques used in human fertility treatment.
The project is a direct response to the accelerating loss of coral cover. While natural recovery is possible, it is slow and increasingly unreliable under current climate stress. By controlling the fertilization and early growth stages, scientists hope to give the new coral a stronger start and increase the chances of survival.
Why This Matters
The Great Barrier Reef is not only a biodiversity hotspot but also a major economic asset for Australia, supporting tourism and fishing industries. Its decline has global implications, as coral reefs worldwide are under similar pressure. The Larval Restoration Project is one of several experimental approaches being tested, and its success could inform future restoration efforts in other regions.
However, researchers acknowledge that such interventions are not a substitute for addressing the root causes of climate change. The reef's long-term survival still depends on global action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and curb ocean warming. For now, the team is focused on the immediate task of collecting and nurturing this year's spawn, with the hope that their efforts will help restore color and life to the reef's most damaged areas.
