Cosmic Evolution: The Universe Might Be Learning Its Own Physics
A new paper from researchers at Microsoft, Brown University, and a Disney consultant suggests the universe's laws may evolve over time, akin to biological adaptation. The theory, published in 'The Autodidactic Universe,' posits that cosmic rules could emerge through a self-teaching mechanism, though experts urge caution as it remains unpeer-reviewed.
A provocative hypothesis emerging from a collaboration of scientists at Microsoft, Brown University, and a consultant for Disney's 'A Wrinkle in Time' suggests that the fundamental laws governing the cosmos might not be eternal constants. Instead, they could be evolving, adapting over eons much like living organisms, a concept that challenges the bedrock of modern physics.
The idea is detailed in a paper titled 'The Autodidactic Universe,' released earlier this year and spotlighted in a recent Popular Mechanics explainer. An autodidact, by definition, learns without a teacher, and the authors propose that the universe itself may operate in such a manner, gradually acquiring the rules that dictate its behavior.
"We ask whether there might be a mechanism woven into the fabric of the natural world, by means of which the universe could learn its laws," the researchers wrote in the paper, which has not yet undergone peer review. The theory draws a parallel to biological evolution: just as trilobites and dinosaurs vanished while cats and dogs persisted through adaptation, the cosmos may have similarly refined its own principles over time.
In the early universe, for instance, Newton's law of universal gravitation—which states that every mass attracts every other mass with a force proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them—might not have held true. The paper suggests that such laws could have emerged later, as the universe 'learned' them through a process akin to artificial intelligence, where systems develop new rules from experience.
Janna Levin, a professor of physics and astronomy at Barnard College of Columbia University, who was not involved in the research, offered an outside perspective. "Over time, that system will teach itself, and some fundamental laws will arise, and that's really what they're talking about [in the paper]," she told Popular Mechanics. "If the universe can compute with a given set of algorithms, then maybe it can do the same kind of thing we see in artificial intelligence, where you have self-learning systems that teach themselves new rules. And by rules, in cosmology we mean laws of physics."
The authors themselves remain cautious, acknowledging the speculative nature of their work. They describe it as a preliminary step, writing, "Of course, this is just a first step. There are varied potential spin-offs from our approach." This measured tone underscores the need for further research before such a paradigm shift could gain wider acceptance.
While the notion of a universe that learns its own physics is undeniably mind-bending, it serves as a reminder of the profound mysteries that persist in our understanding of the cosmos. The paper, though unpeer-reviewed, opens a dialogue about the flexibility of what we consider immutable laws, inviting both skepticism and curiosity from the scientific community.
