Leaked video footage has surfaced showing a Canadian deep sea mining firm discharging sediment into the ocean, raising fresh concerns about the industry's environmental practices. The footage, captured by scientists hired to monitor operations for The Metals Company (TMC), reveals sediment streaming from the side of a vessel into the water below, where clouds of stirred sediment are visible beneath a discolored surface.
The scientists, who were tasked with assessing TMC's environmental monitoring strategy, allege that the company failed to adequately account for sediment plumes kicked up from the seabed during mining operations. This oversight could have significant consequences for marine life, according to the researchers, who spoke to The Guardian. Their testimony suggests that the incident was not an isolated lapse but part of a broader pattern of inadequate oversight.
Technical Glitch or Systemic Issue?
TMC has acknowledged the discharge, attributing it to a technical issue and insisting that the problem was promptly fixed. The company stated that the unprompted release "did not have the potential to cause serious harm." However, the scientists' accounts cast doubt on TMC's assurances. They claim that a subcontractor attempted to influence their findings by instructing them to collect water samples only when no sediment plumes were present, thereby skewing the data.
Further complicating matters, the subcontractor reportedly deviated from the approved plan by using a robot to generate a disturbance on the seabed, rendering the data gathered to assess TMC's mining techniques useless. These allegations, if true, suggest a deliberate effort to obscure the environmental impact of the company's operations.
Calls for Moratoriums Intensify
The incident comes amid growing global scrutiny of deep sea mining, which is being promoted as a source of rare earth minerals essential for electric vehicle batteries. However, the industry's practices remain largely opaque, masking potential harm to ocean ecosystems. Over 700 scientists have signed a petition calling for a moratorium on deep sea mining, and countries like France have outright banned the practice. Germany and Chile are considering similar measures or have signed onto international moratoriums.
As one of the industry's largest players, TMC's actions under observation raise questions about what occurs behind closed doors. "We don't know what the consequences of those problems were under the surface of the sea," said Catherine Coumans, research coordinator for MiningWatch Canada, in an interview with The Guardian. "We're only seeing the tip of the iceberg. We're not getting transparency."
The leaked video and subsequent allegations underscore the need for greater accountability in an industry that operates in largely uncharted regulatory waters. As the demand for battery minerals grows, the balance between resource extraction and environmental preservation remains a contentious issue, with scientists and advocacy groups pushing for more rigorous oversight and public disclosure.
