Google has set a 2017 deadline to match all of its data center electricity consumption with renewable energy purchases, a move that underscores the tech sector's growing commitment to cutting carbon emissions. The company announced the goal this week, building on its existing investments in wind and solar projects.
The pledge means that for every unit of electricity Google's global operations draw from local power grids, the company will buy an equivalent amount of renewable energy from sources like wind farms and solar installations. This accounting method, known as renewable energy matching, does not mean the data centers themselves run directly on green power—they still rely on the same grid mix as other businesses and homes, which often includes coal or natural gas.
Google's 2015 renewable energy purchases totaled 5.7 terawatt hours, covering about 44 percent of its electricity needs. The new commitment aims to close that gap entirely within two years, a timeline that some industry analysts view as ambitious given the variability of renewable generation and the need for long-term power purchase agreements.
The announcement arrives as countries like Costa Rica and Spain have made significant strides in renewable adoption, and as the tech industry faces scrutiny over its environmental footprint. Estimates suggest that the sector contributes roughly two percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, a figure that has prompted calls for more aggressive corporate action.
Why the Tech Industry's Energy Choices Matter
Google's pledge is part of a broader trend among major corporations to address climate change, but its scale is notable. The company operates data centers across multiple continents, each with different energy infrastructures and regulatory environments. Meeting the 2017 target will require expanding its portfolio of renewable energy contracts, which already include wind farms in the United States and solar projects in other regions.
Critics note that corporate renewable pledges do not always lead to immediate reductions in fossil fuel use, since the physical electricity still comes from the grid. However, proponents argue that such commitments create market demand for clean energy, encouraging utilities to invest in new capacity. Google's approach, which involves buying renewable energy from the same grid where its data centers operate, is designed to support this dynamic.
The company has not disclosed specific plans for how it will achieve the 100 percent goal, but its history of large-scale renewable purchases suggests a strategy of signing long-term agreements with developers. These deals typically lock in prices for wind or solar power, providing financial certainty for both parties.
For the tech industry, Google's move could serve as a benchmark. Other major players, including Amazon and Microsoft, have made similar commitments, but the pace and scope of their efforts vary. As the sector's energy demand grows with cloud computing and artificial intelligence, the pressure to adopt clean power is likely to intensify.
While the 2017 target is a clear milestone, the broader challenge of decarbonizing the entire electricity system remains. Google's pledge, however, offers a concrete example of how a large corporation can leverage its purchasing power to accelerate the transition to renewables, even if the path is not without complications.
