Amazon Web Services Takes on Medical Record Analysis
Amazon has launched a new software service that uses artificial intelligence to parse and organize patient medical records, aiming to reduce administrative burdens for hospitals and physicians. The tool, developed by Amazon Web Services, can transcribe handwritten notes and extract key clinical details with high accuracy, according to company executives.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has introduced a new artificial intelligence-powered software designed to help hospitals and physicians manage and search electronic patient records, marking the company's latest move into the healthcare sector. The software addresses a long-standing challenge: while most U.S. hospitals have adopted electronic health records, these systems often contain unstructured data, including scanned handwritten notes and free-text fields. Amazon's AI analyzes this information, converting it into a searchable format that can be queried for specific patient details such as diagnoses, treatments, dosages, and medication strengths. Matt Wood, general manager of artificial intelligence at AWS, told The Wall Street Journal that the system can “completely, automatically look inside medical language and identify patient details” with “incredibly high accuracy.”
This initiative builds on Amazon's broader healthcare ambitions, which began to surface publicly in late 2016. Since then, the company has taken incremental steps, including establishing a healthcare lab and acquiring an online pharmacy. The new software, however, is a direct foray into clinical data management, a field traditionally dominated by specialized health IT vendors.
Why It Matters for Hospitals
For healthcare providers, the potential benefit is twofold: time savings and cost reduction. By automating the transcription of physician notes and making it easier to search patient histories, the software could free up nurses and other staff who would otherwise manually re-enter or retrieve information. This allows them to focus on direct patient care, a priority for many hospitals facing staffing shortages and budget constraints.
Despite the promise, the technology is not without challenges. Medical records are subject to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which imposes strict privacy and security requirements. Amazon has addressed this by implementing customer-specific authorization keys, ensuring that only authorized personnel can access the processed data. The company has not disclosed the pricing or the number of hospitals currently using the service.
Amazon's entry into medical record analysis follows earlier experiments with AI in healthcare. In 2015, Mount Sinai Hospital in New York developed a system called Deep Patient, which used similar algorithms to process patient records and even predict potential illnesses. While Amazon's software focuses on data extraction and searchability, the underlying deep learning technology is comparable.
The sensitive nature of medical data requires careful handling, and experts caution that AI systems must be rigorously tested to avoid errors that could affect patient care. Amazon claims its software performs on par with or better than existing tools, but independent evaluations have not been published.
As Amazon expands its healthcare footprint, the company is positioning itself not just as a retailer or cloud provider, but as a key player in the digitization of medicine. Whether this leads to faster diagnoses or improved outcomes remains to be seen, but the move signals a growing convergence of big tech and healthcare.
